Objective

Find Arabelle, the seven-year-old daughter of Luvash, who was kidnapped three days ago from the Vistani Camp.

What the Party Knows

The Abduction

Three days ago (Neyavr 1), Arabelle vanished while under the watch of her cousin Alexei. The circumstances were suspicious:

  • Yan, a long-time member of the Vistani encampment, gave Alexei wine that caused him to fall into a deep, drunken sleep
  • When Alexei awoke, both Arabelle and Yan were gone
  • Savid (a dusk elf guard) discovered Yan’s decapitated body near the Luna River, with clear signs of a violent struggle

Evidence from the Crime Scene

The party investigated the riverside clearing where Yan’s body was found and discovered:

Three Sets of Footprints:

  1. First set came from the north, ended abruptly in grass (this was Yan’s - he died here)
  2. Second set came from the north, continued southwest to a tree trunk 30 feet away, then went UP into the canopy (someone fled by climbing)
  3. Third set emerged from the western woods, showed signs of fighting with the first, then led toward the riverbank carrying something heavy and child-sized

Physical Evidence:

  • A torn shred of expensive silk fabric caught on a tree branch 20 feet up (where the second set of footprints fled)
  • The silk fabric carried a faint whiff of undead energy (detected by Arden’s divine senses)
  • A platinum signet ring bearing Khazan’s personal sigil (symbols of necromancy and evocation schools of magic), dropped during the struggle

The Party’s Conclusion: The evidence points to Escher, Strahd’s vampire spawn coachman whom they met at the River Ivlis Crossroads in Session 5. The expensive silk, undead energy, and ability to climb/flee into trees all match. Arabelle was likely taken to Castle Ravenloft.

The Mysterious Ring

Kasimir Velikov identified the ring’s symbols as representing necromancy and evocation magic, and noted the sigil belonged to Khazan, an archmage who built a tower on Lake Baratok. Victor Vallakovich confirmed this, explaining that Khazan’s tower is heavily enchanted and sits at the end of a gravel causeway on the lake.

The ring’s presence at the abduction site suggests a connection between Arabelle’s kidnapping and Khazan’s tower, though the exact nature of this connection remains unclear.

Leads & Progress

Active Leads

  • Khazan’s Tower: The mysterious ring suggests investigating the wizard’s tower on Lake Baratok might provide clues about why Arabelle was taken. Victor Vallakovich has asked the party to explore the tower and bring back any magical artifacts they find.

  • Rictavio’s Connection: The party discovered that Rictavio’s carnival wagon was at Lake Baratok near Khazan’s tower. Yellow paint spatters and wagon tracks prove his presence at the site. Combined with the ring bearing Khazan’s sigil found at the abduction, this places Rictavio at the center of the mystery - though his exact role and motives remain unclear.

  • Ezmerelda d’Avenir: The party found Ezmerelda’s wagon at Lake Baratok and spoke with her chicken, Eggsmerelda. Ezmerelda is a monster hunter who has been missing for several days, searching for something in the woods. Her connection to the case, if any, is unknown.

  • The Second Witness: Someone else was at the abduction site (the one who climbed the tree and fled, leaving behind a handkerchief with initials “R.V.R.”). The party recalls receiving a manuscript about werewolves from Arturi Radanavich, written by someone named “Rudolph Van Richten” - the initials match.

Reward

Luvash promised 500 gold pieces—or treasure of equal worth—for bringing Arabelle home safely. While the party did not claim the monetary reward, they received:

  • From Dr. Rudolph van Richten: His talisman of echoes (a rare magical item allowing the casting of gentle repose and speak with dead)
  • From Arrigal: A promise to deliver false information to Strahd once when requested (with the caveat that the information cannot be obviously false and must be plausible)
  • From Luvash: The eternal gratitude and debt of the Vallaki Vistani

Appearance in Sessions

  • Session 13 — Received the quest from Luvash and Arrigal at the Vistani Camp; investigated the crime scene at the Luna River; discovered evidence pointing to Escher and Castle Ravenloft

  • Session 16 (Neyavr 6) — The party traveled to Lake Baratok with Szoldar Szoldarovich and Yevgeni Krushkin as guides. At the Luna River Crossroads, they found a handkerchief bearing the initials “R.V.R.” - matching the author “Rudolph Van Richten” of the werewolf manuscript they received from Arturi Radanavich. At the lake, they discovered Ezmerelda d’Avenir’s wagon and spoke with her chicken companion, Eggsmerelda, learning that Ezmerelda is a monster hunter who has been missing for several days. Most significantly, the party found wagon tracks and yellow paint spatters proving that Rictavio’s carnival wagon was at Lake Baratok near Khazan’s tower - definitively connecting Rictavio to Arabelle’s abduction, though his exact role remains unclear.

  • Session 17 - The Tower and The Truth (Neyavr 6) — Quest Complete! The party solved the arcane puzzle on the tower door using the platinum signet ring, fought and defeated four stone gargoyles, and explored Van Richten’s Tower. Inside, they discovered overwhelming evidence: a Burned Journal Page in Van Richten’s handwriting, a sketch of “Rictavio’s Carnival of Wonders,” Arabelle’s beaded bracelet wrapped around a silvered dagger and the Hooded One Tarokka card (which she had deliberately left as clues), a suit of plate armor, and paint pots in the lake matching Rictavio’s wagon. The party confronted Rictavio at the Arasek Stockyard, and after tense negotiations, he removed his hat of disguise to reveal his true identity: Dr. Rudolph van Richten, the legendary monster hunter. He opened his wagon to show Arabelle alive and safe inside, explaining he had rescued her from Yan and Escher at the Luna River when they attempted to bring her to Castle Ravenloft on Strahd’s orders. The mystery of the missing Vistana was finally solved.

  • Session 18 - Brokering Peace (Neyavr 6) — Van Richten recounted the full story of Arabelle’s rescue: how he’d witnessed Yan delivering her to Escher, killed Yan, and used his talisman of echoes to interrogate the dead Vistana’s severed head, learning of Strahd’s bounty on children matching Arabelle’s description. When Arrigal emerged from the shadows to reclaim his niece, the party brokered a delicate peace agreement: Van Richten would move his wagon to the woods near the Vistani Camp where Luvash could visit Arabelle daily, while Arrigal—revealed to be one of Strahd’s spies—would feed the vampire false information about her whereabouts. Arabelle then delivered a dark prophecy of eternal night and rising dead before collapsing unconscious. The party accompanied the unlikely trio to the Vistani camp, where Luvash tearfully reunited with his daughter and swore the Vallaki Vistani would be forever in their debt. As rewards for your aid, Van Richten gave you his talisman of echoes, and Arrigal promised to deliver false information to Strahd once when requested—though he would continue his work as a spy otherwise.
