Who they are
Rahadin is Strahd’s chamberlain and most trusted servant, a dusk elf known by the grim title of “the Kinslayer.” He is surrounded by a horrifying aura—the psychic screaming of thousands of murdered souls that he has personally killed. The sound is so terrible that merely approaching him becomes an ordeal of willpower.
What the party knows
The party has encountered Rahadin twice, both times as Strahd’s emissary carrying out his master’s will with cold efficiency:
- He delivered Strahd’s black carriage at the River Ivlis Crossroads, accompanied by Escher
- He delivered Strahd’s dinner invitation to the party in Vallaki, remaining utterly impassive even when the party defaced the invitation in increasingly absurd ways
- He presided over the execution of Milivoj and Henrik van der Voort for their role in stealing The Bones of St. Andral
- The party successfully argued for clemency, convincing Rahadin to reduce the death sentences to flogging—proving he can be reasoned with, though he plays the role of a harsh, adversarial judge
- He rides an ash-gray phantom steed that he can summon at will
- His loyalty to Strahd is absolute and unquestioning
Personality
Rahadin embodies cold, unwavering professionalism. He remains calm and composed in all circumstances, treating even the most absurd provocations with detached disdain. His demeanor is that of a dutiful servant carrying out distasteful but necessary tasks—bored by resistance, satisfied when his duties are complete, and irritated only when delayed.
He shows no remorse for the thousands of souls that scream around him, nor does he take pleasure in cruelty for its own sake. Everything he does serves one purpose: executing Strahd’s will as his faithful, ever-loyal servant—no matter the cost to himself or others.
When challenged, Rahadin becomes adversarial but fair, willing to hear arguments and adjust his actions if sufficiently convinced—but only within the bounds of what he believes serves his master’s interests.
Where we’ve seen them
Session 05 - Out of Barovia (Neyavr 3) — The party first encountered Rahadin when he delivered Strahd’s black carriage to the River Ivlis Crossroads, accompanied by the vampire spawn Escher. The psychic screaming of thousands of murdered souls surrounded him—a horrifying aura that made even approaching him an ordeal. He collected the carriage and departed without incident.
Session 18 - Brokering Peace (Neyavr 6) — Rahadin made two deliveries to Vallaki on this evening. First, he intercepted the party as they left Wachterhaus, riding his ash-gray phantom steed through the gates unopposed. He delivered an invitation from Strahd to dine at Castle Ravenloft in eight days’ time. When the party responded by defacing the invitation—burning it, urinating on it, stomping on it, and having Choppy conjure a dirt homunculus to urinate on it once more—Rahadin remained utterly impassive. He simply asked if they were “quite done,” accepted their eventual agreement to attend, and departed after increasing the volume of his psychic screaming as a quiet reminder of his power.
Later that same evening, Rahadin returned to the town square to deliver Strahd’s justice. Milivoj and Henrik van der Voort, the conspirators who had stolen The Bones of St. Andral, knelt in shackles before him, facing execution. Rahadin read aloud a proclamation from Strahd finding both men guilty of crimes against Vallaki and sentenced them to death. However, he allowed the party to speak in their defense, presenting mitigating circumstances. The party argued eloquently that Henrik had acted under coercion from Volenta (one of Strahd’s own spawn) and that Milivoj had been driven by poverty and manipulated by Henrik. Rahadin played the role of a cold, adversarial judge, pushing back against their arguments and probing for weaknesses in their reasoning. Ultimately, through skilled persuasion, the party convinced him to reduce both sentences from death to flogging: twelve lashes each. Rahadin personally delivered the punishment with precise, measured strikes. Henrik screamed and wept, while Milivoj gritted his teeth and refused to cry out. Once justice was served, Rahadin departed on his phantom steed, leaving the party to heal the wounded men with divine and arcane magic.
